Grab your friends and come ride the Buffalo Creek Trail!

The Buffalo Creek Recreational Trail is located in Wild and Wonderful Clay County, West Virginia, home of the Golden Delicious Apple and the Mighty Elk River.

The trail was founded in 2015 by the Buffalo Creek Watershed Improvement Association and the Clay County Business Development Authority.

From the beginning, the goal was to create a recreational attraction and a viable rail corridor for economic development, centered around the Buffalo Creek Watershed and the Buffalo Creek Railroad.

The flood of 2016 caused some major setbacks, but after many trail clearing parties and lots of volunteer hard work a six mile long section of the Buffalo Creek Rail line was put back to good use. In 2018, they added a rail excursion train and railbike rides.

The 12 mile round trip Buffalo Creek Rail Ride takes approximately 2 ½ hours and travels through some of the most beautiful forest scenery in the world. In addition to the scenic Buffalo Creek, there are countless unique rock formations, including the Devil’s Sawmill waterfall. Nature abounds with white tail deer, lush forests, wildflowers, clear streams and a variety of birds.

Nature enthusiasts, birders, cyclists, and rail fans are sure to enjoy the amazing sights. Great for families and group events, bring your friends! We’ll keep large groups together in the lineup.

You have two choices for fun!

Railbikes are a pedal powered physical activity for ages 10 and up, with four wheels that ride the rails. The grade is gentle and suitable for most physical conditions.
The Rail Excursion Ride is fun for all ages and consists of comfortable open rail cars pulled by an antique gas-powered Fairmont jitney. The ride moves at a leisurely pace of approximately 5-7 mph with scheduled stops so you have the opportunity to disembark and truly experience the wilderness and history of the trail.
Rail bikes and rail cars all leave together and travel together as a group so your whole family can enjoy the trip. Our rides aren’t just for sight-seeing. At the turnaround point, riders get time as the crew turns the rail-bikes around for the trip back. Bring your pole and fish in the trout stocked Buffalo Creek, or wear your swimwear to take a dip in the cool waters.
Come prepared to enjoy nature. Closed toed shoes, and comfortable, loose fitting clothing suitable for hiking or cycling are recommended. Bring wet weather gear if rain is in the forecast.
